A 29-year-old budding rapper was killed and another man critically wounded during a shooting in the Longwood section of the Bronx early yesterday, the police said.
The man who was killed, identified by his family as Derrick Francis, and who rapped under the moniker Gangsta, was pronounced dead in the lobby of 784 Fox Street, the building where relatives said he lived with his girlfriend and twin daughters, and where the shooting took place. The other man, a 20-year-old shot in the chest, whom the police did not identify, was taken to Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center and was in stable condition, the police said.
Mr. Francis's relatives said he was shot after he tried to intervene in a fight between other people. But an investigator, who requested anonymity because the investigation had just started, gave a different version of events.
The investigator said that about 4:30 a.m., Mr. Francis and the other victim had been out on Southern Boulevard, where Mr. Francis, an aspiring rapper, was stabbed by an unknown man. Mr. Francis and his friend ran back to 784 Fox Street, but were chased down by the stabber and several other men who shot at them, the investigator said.
The police did not disclose a motive for the shooting
