Unless you just got into independent hip hop last week you are definitely familiar with Rawkus Record’s rise from heralded indie upstart to their convergence with MCA and repositioning as a major label brand name, and their fall to music industry obscurity. Rawkus has been blessed by such acts as Big L, Talib Kweli and Mos Def to name but three.

However a new chapter in the story of Rawkus records begins this month. The label, still under the umbrella of MCA, is prepping for it's first release in over a year and a half. This month Rawkus records will drop a ‘Best Of’ collection featuring some of the singles that made Rawkus the most important independent hip hop label of the 1990s.

Rawkus also just recently signed the critically acclaimed underground hip hop group The Procussions to the label and will release their next LP, 5 Sparrows for 2 Cents in early 2006. With the addition of The Procussions to the label Rawkus is quickly making good on their promise that they will again attempt to break new acts and push existing ones to the forefront of the hip hop industry.

StreetHop.com wishes Rawkus the best of luck with their endeavors and hope that this label full of hip-hop history, will rise again.
