Competition football (non-EPL) 2011/2012

Ireland win the 4 nations.

The tournament has been pretty poorly planned though. Rubbish attendances, the games haven't been great, a few players aren't involved due to the playoffs.
As you say it was poorly planned.

It would have been better to host it over a weekend. With the winners and losers of the first games playing on the Sunday.

Looks like Shevchenko plans on retiring after the Euros.

Andriy Shevchenko has announced his intention to retire from the game after the European Championship in 2012.

The striker will feature for his native Ukraine side in the tournament which is jointly hosted by the Ukraine and Poland.
The 34-year-old has been an influential figure for his national side during his glittering career, as well as plying his trade for some of the biggest club teams in world football.
The Dynamo Kiev striker will hope to go out with a bang to cap off a career that included spells at AC Milan
and Chelsea

"I have decided to retire right after Euro 2012," said Shevchenko.
"This is my final decision.
"We are all set to perform at our best at our home European Championships and I believe we can challenge the clear favourites in the battle for the title if luck is on our side."
Great striker, should have never moved to Chelsea.

Anyone watch the U21 tournament? We got a good draw against Spain but really they totally battered us in every area. The midfield was awful, Henderson, Cleverly (Rated highly at Man Utd for some reason) Mancienne were woeful. Kyle Walker was the only one that looked good along with Smalling.

I don't know about battered. They kept possession really well. But it was a bit tippy tappy with no cutting edge. England were far too flat though. I agree about smallng he was fantastic. Walker is abit too raw though. I watched him a lot past year, and he's been the same. Ver quick, very attacking but loses the ball a lot and a few holes. He was great for villa, but also respnsible for a few of their goals. I still think he is good enough for spurs first 11 thiugh.

Spain's goal was handball and england's was offside.

Albrighton was on the bench too. He is usually the u21's main man. A few other strange choices in the england lineup too.

Battered was probably a bit strong, if Spain had a better striker then they probably would have won. What still gets me is how far we lack technically, players like Henderson, Rodwell are valued at £20-25m but can barely trap a ball. Sturridge, although talented had the technique of a camel. Why do we lack players with a good first touch? Thiago made 100 more passes than the nearest English player (Phil Jones).

Its not just the Spanish who are technically gifted, every national team we play all seem to be comfortable in passing the ball, and keeping possession, in England if we keep the ball for 30 seconds without lumping it forward the fans get impatient, this tactic hasn't worked for decades. Scholes made some good points about the lack of technique in England earlier today.

Yeah, I agree. They look derived of ideas also. I don't think Pearce helps though.

The pain problem with youth football in this country is you can only train for a few hours a week. In Spain it is unlimited. We need to adopt the Nou Camp way. But that can't be done until cocks like Brooking get out the way and listen to those who actually manage the players.

Yes, an education should they fail to make the grade in football is a good idea. But we also need to allow our talented youngsters to flourish with more time with a ball. Most of these footballers aren't going to be interested in jobs that involve maths and English so why not spend the time helping them gain FIFA coaching badges or educate them in the agent or money side of the game. There's a lot of opportunities in football, even if they don't make it as a player.

yea players like Jones and Henderson cost their clubs almost the same as Luis Suarez. Amazing really.

Yeah, Saurez in his 6 months at Liverpool did more than Henderson/Jones/Rodwell/ have done so far. Man Utd are linked with Rodwell, I don't see anything special in him he has shown flashes of brilliance but more often than not the game seems to pass him by, Everton want £25-30m for him. What the fuck.

England played so defensively. Sinclair or Albrighton should definately have started.

That being said a draw is still a decent result and i would expect both England and Spain to qualify.

Really bad.

What is Pearce trying to do? It's such a negative formation with a negative team selection. And why is the ball hoofed long?

We are rated the best team at u21 level, after this tournament we are sure to drop a few places. Get Mark Albrighton on that fucking pitch...!

^ I agree. Our midfield is awful, Mancienne isn't a midfielder, so why is he playing there? Rodwell does nothing, Henderson does nothing, Cleverly does nothing. We have far too many passengers that for some reason are rated highly.

A lot of people are surprised that Albrighton doesn't play.

We are rated by ourselves as the best team at u21 level, after this tournament we are sure to drop a few places. Get Mark Albrighton on that fucking pitch...!

if the defenders keep hoofing the ball up the field how can the midfielders get into the game though?

Its not like that happens for the whole 90 minutes though, the midfielders can't hold on to the ball, their only option is to pass forward, they never try to keep possession. Mancienne can't pass the ball at all, Henderson and Rodwell will run around and put in effort but don't actually contribute anything, Cleverly also.
