ACTA, SOPA and PIPA

It's crazy how many websites stopped working today. For us Europeans it's because of ACTA, for Americans is because of SOPA but since the internet is pretty much international it means that it will affect basically everyone, everywhere.
It's crazy how old, stupid people might've come up with something that irresponsible. It's basically a threat to information freedom, attack on the internet, freedom of speech, independence and knowledge and for me today it's a treat to my project's completion, biatch. Fortunately there's still a way to see wikipedia.

I'm surprised that there's no mention on Google, or at least our Google since they're huge opposers.

In short what it means for Americans is China-esque censorship and oppression over the internet, prohibiting the use of information and arresting people over it. It's really an extremely huge thing.

Everything major is down. I knew this blackout was happening for weeks now, but instinctively I've caught myself going to blackout sites three times in the last fifteen minutes, forgetting they were out. Twice to Wikipedia and once to Reddit. Obviously Google is still working but the logo reflects their opposition to all of it.

It's pretty coonshit what they're trying to do. If it does pass, which I really doubt it will, I think we'll have an Anonymous-type cyber attack that will bring the US Government to its knees and revert back. The internet is probably the most powerful thing on this Earth, if you think about it. There are very few things it can not do if you try hard enough.

Yeah, Google blacked out its logo and provided information and a way to sign a petition. If Google went down like Reddit, Craigslist, and Wiki did, we'd have world wide riots.

Yeah, how would people find funny pictures, rent hookers, and plagiarize half their essays from?

They'd use Bing. :)

I guess I mean more if Google disabled its services too. Imagine not having access to Docs for some people and especially small businesses who use Google Apps.

One of my senators withdrew support on PIPA about two months ago but she is supporting the OPEN Act. I'll have to look into it. I just think it's cool that I e-mailed her and got a response from her team. They were ready for those e-mails haha.

So from what I understand this has to do with copyright infringement and will target sites that are considered to be abusing an IP?

"Target" sites is an understatement. Any kind of copyrighted materials and materials related to them might make your site blocked.
For example - you post a picture from Skyrim - your site disappears off the internet.
You upload a video playing a video game - you might get sued.
You use a part of someone's thesis to prove a point - your website disappears.

Any company will be able to just send a list of websites that they believe might in any way encourage anyone to copy copyrighted material, contain any elements of copyrighted material and they disappear off the internet and their owners might get sued.

It's retarded because it's also about duplicating information - according to ACTA and PIPA they can only be uploaded by the copyright holder and they can sue people for copying them in any way and make their websites disappear off the internet.

I see. So it punishes people who reap the benefits from another persons work. On principle alone, I can't disagree with that.
