Image of what’s being called the LG X3 leaks online, another quad-core Android?

By Ian Hardy on January 20, 2012 at 11:07am in Mobile News

Execs at CES 2012 stated to us that their big mobile announcements will be revealed at Mobile World Congress in February – hopefully this leaked image above is one of them. What you’re looking at is currently said to be called the LG “X3″, a quad-core Android-powered device that might be running OS 4.0. The pic of the X3 looks incredibly thin and rumoured to be under 9mm. In addition, the screen is huge at 4.7 inches (resolution of 1280×720). Other rumoured specs have it with an 8MP camera, a 1.3MP front-facing camera for video calling, 16GB of memory, 2000mAh battery, NFC capabilities, Wi-Fi, 21Mbps HSPA – possibly LTE-enabled – and launch sometime late Spring or early Summer. Here’s hoping somebody leaks this online, but MWC is only a few weeks away now.

I dunno if I've mentioned this before but a lot of students in my class this semester have started using tablets. Of course, the iPad (1 or 2, I dunno) but I see several people with the magnetic screen cover/stand and I'm not quite sure what they're doing and why they bring it. I thought, before this semester started, that I'd view PowerPoints in class on my TP, but after some time, I realized it wasn't ideal and that a laptop was better, despite being bigger. It should be noted that I don't have a stand for my tablet.

I know a few people I used to talk to play Fruit Ninja on it within the group of 10 people or so they sit with, and they just pass two iPads two of the guys have around and fuck around with it. It was interesting to note that a friend of mine saw my TP in my room the other day and I told him it was an HP device running webOS, but I also put Android on it. Another friend asked how much it was and I told him I got it in the $100 fire sale. The other guy laughed and said "yeah, because it was recalled." What an ignorant coon. I didn't even debate with him, I just smiled that I was fortunate enough to have a tablet whereas this guy, I have a feeling, has been getting by this semester using his iPod Touch and iPhone for internet because his dog (the puppy who mysteriously died and was buried in his backyard in a hotel) chewed his laptop charger and it didn't work. He should have gotten a new one when he went home, but....I haven't seen his laptop in class so far. Just his iPhone. Just goes to show how much of a coon some jealous people can be.

But CM9 is out for the TP, but a few things aren't working and so I'd much rather wait until just about everything is working (YouTube HD, camera, etc.) before upgrading. It's an Alpha 0, what did I expect? But I can't wait to get away from this shitty phone OS and finally get ICS on it and see how that runs. I know those iPad users will be butt-hurt over widgets. Well, the two shits I don't like; the other people can do as they please.

Other tablets around here aren't brought to school that often. One friend of mine has a PlayBook and the other has a XOOM.

No, the funny part is that it was never even recalled. To this dipshit, "recall" and "discontinued" mean the same thing.

Also, I lied. I didn't wait until all the bugs were fixed to flash ICS. As soon as I posted that, I went to XDA, read the instructions, saw it took all of 15 seconds to type into Terminal (command prompt) so I downloaded the release and flashed it. Still getting everything back in order but I'm loving it so far.

well, it was a commercial failure. so the guy has a somewhat geeky, lame point.
I didn't realize "recall" and "discontinued" meant the same thing. Thee's nothing geeky about that statement.

I ain't mad. I just finally got live wallpapers to work flawlessly on my device, without stutters and all that crap, unlike on my Droid. I'm like a coon with a French fry.

in the realm of pissing contests between males, telling one that his gadget is discontinued is on the geeky end of the spectrum.
But he didn't tell me that. He said "recalled." And while it may be a geeky thing to do, this guy is far from being a geek. He uses an iPhone 3, for dick's sake.

Should have said that instead.

Really hoping for a more stable version of ICS soon. I know it's an alpha, but at the same time random reboots and occasional flashes of a blue fuzzy screen in between operations is a bit annoying.

Once they get the camera and mic working, I'll be truly happy. Forget hardware-accelerated graphics (for the time being, at least) since I don't watch too many YouTube videos.

HTC Sense 4.0 will be toned-down and mature, with heavy Dropbox integration

By Daniel Bader on January 27, 2012 at 1:12pm in Mobile News

We’re honestly pretty excited for HTC Sense 4.0, which is supposed to de-clutter, de-compress and beautify the bloated state of Sense UI in its current incarnation. According to Pocketnow, after a hands-on preview with the upcoming software running Android 4.0, it’s clear that HTC is learning its lessons.
Main features include a typical improvement for typography, owing to the Roboto font inclusion in ICS, but more so there are going to be significant UI improvements to almost every app. Although it looks like HTC devices will not forgo capacitive hardware buttons below the screen, most of the UI elements will shift appropriately to the side when the device is turned to landscape mode (think HTC Status). It does seem that, like LG, HTC are getting rid of the dedicated Search button (good riddance).
Along with an improved 3D task switcher (different from the current ICS version) Sense 4.0 is to overhaul the lockscreen, incorporating notifications a la iOS 5 as well as the traditional app shortcuts. There will be a Guest Mode for users who want to play around without gaining access to the core file system and protected apps, and the browser is to get a Reading List-type feature to save pages for later (another feature taken from stock ICS).
The email app has seen significant improvements, and Pocketnow calls it “the best-looking and most functional email client available for Android.”
One of the coolest additions to Sense 4.0 will be integrated Dropbox support, with all new HTC owners earning 50GB in free storage from the rather pricy company. This is huge, and will be a big draw to users. Apparently your Dropbox folder will interpreted like a regular device folder, and you can sync certain files to store locally on the device if needed. And, of course, Beats Audio will be expanded to support all music players.
Like what you hear? Wait for the first official details at the end of February at MWC.

I'm hoping samsung doesn't debut the s3 at mwc. It would be a better choice to wait and use the exynos 5250. They'd be way ahead of the competition if they did

I still really hope that they won't use super "ahead of the competition" hardware but make the phone cooler and innovative by other means instead.
Smartphones are not PCs, yet manufacturers act like if they were.

They need to focus more on optimisation and efficiency - especially on the battery life. phones are fast enough as they are. now we need better battery life. i think a lot of people dont care so much about battey life so long as it gets them through the day. they just end up sticking it on charge before bed and wake up with it fully charged. personally, i dont want to keep having to charge it all the time. i'd be more than happy with 2-3 days of moderate usage. if they can get that in these next-gen powerful phones then that'd be a huge achievement. i think masta said something about a new battery technology earlier in the thread.

Yes, these:

http://www.northwestern.edu/newscenter/stories/2011/11/batteries-energy-kung.html

They last for numerous (up to 10) times longer but lose 50% of their capacity after about 100-150 charge/discharge cycles. However 100 charge/discharge cycles with 10 times more capacity is still enough to offer a few times more capacity after a year of use, since it means approximately a week long cycles for modern smartphones.

Also the new Xperia S packs a pretty much new-tech battery tech with very short charge times. In reality it's a battery that withstands higher current without melting so you can fully charge your battery ln less than an hour.

Has there been mention of the GS2 Plus? I think I scrolled by the article on my Reader in class today. Didn't give it much thought, though.

Yeah there's an update to Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Nexus. They're getting 1,5ghz processors and superior graphics. Nothing special imho. I hope they won't start releasing dozens of new versions of those phones like they still do to the Galaxy S.
There's that Galaxy S advanced or whatever, that is basically a Galaxy S in a different cover, that they only recently released. I'd prefer they started releasing totally new devices.
